Nerdvana 2025

Role: Lead Organizer
Date: May 2025

On May 3rd 2025, 13 special-interest student organizations of SUNY Purchase held their very first ever Comic Con: Nerdvana.As founder and president of CAPES, the comic club sponsored by the Purchase Student Government Association, I served as the lead director of the entire operation.We started planning in February through biweekly meetings with the E-Board members of the other clubs and organizations. Each group was in charge of hosting 1-3 events throughout the day. I created and supervised all flyers and promotion of the event, and the merch design as well.

The day was filled with so many activities, such as an artist alley featuring 24 vendors, a guest speaker from the television industry, multiple video/card game tournaments, a cosplay contest, a mud wrestling performance, and so much more. We received around 300 guests throughout the day. One of our artists reported that they made $440 from vending that day, incredible!It was such an amazing experience to lead this project and work with my fellow club heads on campus. Throughout the event, I was thanked by many students who often felt neglected when it came to most of the regular programming at the school. It felt great to know that I was doing a service to the nerds and the campus community as a whole.

My first venture into event programming was as the Public Relations officer of Purchase's QPoC (Queer People of Color) Club. When I became Vice President of the Purchase SGA, I wanted to use my increase in funds and access to strengthen a diminishing legacy event of the campus: Fall Ball.It's a night paying homage to the NYC queer ballroom scene, filled to the brim with student drag performances, voguing, waacking and inclusivity.

It was a dream come true to have Aja Miyake Mugler—featured on several seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race—perform at the event!Seeing a confident and talented trans woman of color meant so much to the Purchase students who are still figuring out their identities and place in the world.

Artist Statement

I am an artist who primarily works in illustration and graphic design. I often take inspiration from the media I grew up enjoying such as cartoons, comics, and anime.Most of my pieces start out as doodles that riddle the margins of my notebook paper. I take these ideas and bring them to life through Procreate or Photoshop. Digital Media has always been my main squeeze; The endless freedom I can access at my fingertips gives me a rush like none other.I often see my art as entertainment and to that extent, myself as an entertainer. I love comedy. I love satire. I like to exaggerate! I like to hyperbolize! From the moment I started drawing, my work has always been an outlet for me to process the craziness that is reality, other people, and life in general.My work usually depicts human figures, mostly people of color. Black and brown bodies rarely get a chance to shine, so I make them the forefront of my practice. Concepts related to the future and nostalgia entice me, and my work tends to portray the contradiction between the two. Working with realms that I haven’t lived in myself helps give my pieces a fantastical aspect. I am very big on aesthetics and work to create idyllic pieces with components in visual harmony with each other. I also love to incorporate symbols and hidden meanings for the audience that knows me personally.The content of my work usually comes from my own experiences. I would say I have been dealt a bad hand when it comes to life: growing up queer with religious parents, fighting for my voice to be heard as a black person in predominately-white spaces, and often struggling with severe mental health issues. My intersectionality constantly leads to tough conversations which I use to force others and myself to confront, instead of ignoring them.The fun stuff comes from growing up on the Internet from an age where I probably shouldn’t have. I was raised on multiple servers, Tumblr, DeviantArt, Google+ even. Fandom culture has shaped me in a lot of ways and I’m not embarrassed about it in the slightest. I enjoy referencing aspects of pop culture that I like, and I enjoy interacting with other artists online with similar interests and applying their perspectives into my work. My influences tend to differ from the classics like Rembrandt or Botticelli; they can be a piece made by an obscure user with random digits in their username that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about. I strive to reject the classicism and pretentiousness that continues to riddle the art world by emphasizing how accessible art should be.
